"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." - Albert Einstein.

Neil Robinson BA PGCE DSW MNSPH

I have had 38 years experience as a Counsellor and 26 years as a Hypnotherapist.

That said, throughout my life I have had many different areas of employment and experiences that now I realise that I have learned a lot about what makes people 'tick'. I didn't set out to do that - it just happened
When I left school I became a Police Cadet and then graduated into being a fully-fledged Police Constable in a small town in Norfolk. I have arrested, 'banged up' alleged criminals, cut down suicides from a tree in the village outskirts and reconciled warring neighbours and all by my early twenties.
Then life took another turn in 1968 - I lived in South Africa for a year, Johannesburg and Pretoria, at the time when apartheid was universal there and Mandela was incarcerated (1964-82) on Robben Island. I experienced and learned a lot about discrimination first hand. It was a bit like a university student gap year.

.  . Life story to be continued soonest

I have also had experience in Industry as a welder, fabricator, design engineer and sales representative.
I was a Curate in the Church of England serving at St Peter's and St Mary's Church, Stowmarket. Suffolk.
I was a teacher in Secondary Education for 7 years.
I worked for the City of Edinburgh Social Work Department for 13 years mainly in residential care establishments reaching the level of manager of a Children's Home for "looked after children" as well as being a fully qualified Trades Union Rep with Unison.

My philosophy on life and my driving force is to make a positive difference for having been here. You want something to be different in your life, that's why you're here searching for help or at least something that will make that difference to your life. Over the years the way I do things has been modified by what I have learned from hundreds and hundreds of clients and what they have wanted in their lives. The main thing that people want to feel is that they are in control of their lives and not that whatever their current affliction is is in control, and they want the reassurance that the difference is permanent and they want it now. "A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions." - Oliver Wendell Holmes

Talking to friends and relations is not quite the same thing as they will always have their own agenda and so may well finish your thoughts, sentences, for you before you have had a chance to fully understand them yourself and almost always with their own bias adding their own bits of good 'advice'. You may feel frustrated that they are not really understanding you or get what you are on about. On the other hand you may fear that they are judging you and forming misunderstood opinions about you and this will inhibit your exploration and progress. With over 30years of experience I am a good listener but will ask you the odd question from time to time to nudge/help you along in your exploration of yourself.

I am committed to enabling anyone I see reach their full potential. Be that someone who wants to stop smoking, stop drinking, or stop any addictive behaviour which will lead them to better health and wealth or to parenthood. Also, dealing with phobias or anxiety or depression leads to a better quality of life. Maybe there are relationship issues or having to deal with stuff from the past. Over the years I have dealt with all the issues in the right-hand column and a lot more besides, the list is not exhaustive. Many of the links contain feedback from clients, how their experience has been coming to see me and the difference that they have created in their lives as a result.

My training and life experiences have led me to a point where I treat people as a ‘whole person’ and not a catalogue of symptoms as many issues are inter-related. Anyone who comes to me with whatever problem/s they have will leave with a better understanding of their problem and how to deal with it and themselves and also a set of ‘life tools’ which they can use for the rest of their lives. From the first session people leave with a positive programme of self-care to help prevent re-occurrence and how to be creative with their future.

"A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes." -  Mahatma Gandhi
